Diploma in Language and Literacy Education

Core courses

Language and Literacy Education courses (21-24 credits)
Note: Students may select core courses designated LLED or LIBE. Those who wish to focus their studies on a particular aspect of Language and Literacy Education are encouraged to select core courses from the following list of recommendations. Some of the courses require 300-level prerequisites (see calendar descriptions). The courses listed below have a primary, intermediate or secondary focus. Core courses

Applicants are advised that the prerequisite course(s) must have been taken within the five years previous to enrolling in Language & Literacy Education (LLED) 478C. It is generally possible to complete LLED 478C and credit it later (within 5 years) to the Diploma in TESL Program.

Elective courses

Any 300- or 400- level courses in the Department of Language & Literacy Education (except Teacher Librarianship) (12-18 credits). Courses may be selected from the following:

  • Adult Education 327, 330, 412
  • Anthropology 317, 407, 408, 417
  • Computing Studies Education 400, 402, 422, 424
  • Early Childhood Education 405, 415, 433, 438, 443
  • Education 342, 432
  • Educational Studies 425
  • Linguistics any 300- or 400-level courses
  • Psychology 308
  • Sociology 302, 382, 466
    (0-6 credits)

It is generally possible to complete LLED 478C and credit it later (within 5 years) to the Diploma in TESL Program.

UBC Calendar - Courses

Diploma in Teacher-librarianship

 

Thirty (30) credits are required for the Diploma in Teacher-librarianship program, Twenty-four credits of required courses consist of six core courses in Teacher-librarianship (18 credits), one course in children’s literature (3 credits), and one course in literacy (3 credits). Six credits come from two approved elective courses. Elective courses are available in Teacher-librarianship, Language & Literacy Education, Children's Literature, and Computing Studies & Education, among other areas.

  • LLED 440-446, 449 (3 credits)
  • LLED 450, 451, 452, 453, 454, 456, 459 (3 credits)

  • Any course with the prefix: LLED or LIBE

Other courses may be used as substitutions with permission from the coordinator and the Teacher Education Office

Students may apply up to 12 credits from courses taken through a Western Canadian university towards their UBC Diploma in Teacher-librarianship. Courses must be at the 300 level at minimum. Before registering for a non-UBC course, students must obtain approval for the planned course and the UBC course it is replacing. A memo will then be sent to the Teacher Education Office with the student's request whereupon a letter of permission will be sent to the student and Registrar, and one copy will be placed in the student's file. Students are required to submit transcripts of their completed non-UBC courses to the Teacher Education Office.
