• Becoming Pedagogical through A/r/tography in Teacher Education (2008-2011)
Rita Irwin, Principal investigator. George Belliveau, Peter Gouzouasis, Carl Leggo, Donal O’Donoghue, Stepanie Springgay, Co-investigators.

Addressing the role of the bystander in bullying. SSHRC Standard Research Grant (2007-2010).
George Belliveau, Principal investigator. Shellye Hymel, Co-Investigator.
The goal of this research is to better understand and communicate how drama can assist in efforts to address bullying in schools and communities. Using an interactive drama process, peer teaching, and innovative approaches to dissemination, the project examines effective ways to help empower students to promote social justice through anti-bullying strategies. Focusing on the role of the bystander in bullying, the research seeks to discover how best to activate, through drama, this often-silent majority to intervene productively and become part of the solution.

Assessing ethnotheatre as a form of educational research. Humanities and Social Sciences, UBC Research Grant (2007-2009).
George Belliveau, Principal Investigator.
This research looks specifically at audience and participant (collected) responses of a recent ethnotheatre project the PI undertook with colleagues and graduate students.

Anti-bullying research project. Humanities and Social Sciences, UBC Research Grant (2005-2007).
George Belliveau, Principal Investigator.
This study provided valuable research data on current drama and bullying programs in schools around the world, as well as local Vancouver initiatives. The research team identified particular drama and social justice programs in an effort to evaluate how these can be used most effectively within a research context.

The role of drama on cultural awareness, motivation, and literacy in French immersion classrooms. UBC Faculty of Education Collaboration Research Grant (2005-2007).
George Belliveau and Monique Bournot-Trites, Co-Principal Investigators.
This research project examined how integrating drama in French Immersion classes may impact motivation, literacy, and cultural appreciation for students in a second language context. See http://repositories.cdlib.org/clta/lta/vol3/iss1/art9 for some of the findings.

Impact of teaching style. University of Prince Edward Island Major Research Grant (2004-2006).
George Belliveau, Principal Invesigator. Dan Ryan, Co-Investigator.
This study investigated the impact of student-centered versus teacher-centered learning in first-year university statistics and math classes. Using a drama-based process to teach math-based classes, this project attempted to better understand the possible benefits of experiential and drama-based learning in quantitative courses. See Ryan, Giles, Belliveau de Freitas, 2006 for more details.

Addressing anti-bullying in schools. SSHRC Research-aid Grant (2002-2004).
George Belliveau, Principal Invesigator.
This study examined pre-service teachers using drama to address bullying in schools. The two-year study in PEI investigated an alternative practicum experience where a group of pre-service teachers developed, then toured an anti-bullying theatre play in over 50 schools.
