Faculty Members

Members of the Department of Language & Literacy Education are nationally and internationally recognized for professional leadership and scholarship.

They have:

  • Served as officers and board members of major professional associations such as the International Board on Books for Young People, the Canadian School Library Assoc-iation, the Canadian Council of Teachers of English, the National Reading Conference, the Whole Language Umbrella, the Canadian Association for Applied Linguistics, TESL Canada, National Council of Teachers of English, American Association for Applied Linguistics, TESOL International Research Foundation, and the College Reading Association.

  • Served as Editors and Editorial Board Members of such journals as the English Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of English, Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Language Arts, English Journal, School Libraries in Canada, Journal of Literacy Research, First Language, Canadian Modern Language Review, Modern Language Journal, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, and Alberta Journal of Educational Research.

  • Received grants and fellowships from the Asia-Pacific Foundation, B.C. Ministry of Education, External Affairs - Canada, Health and Welfare - Canada, Secretary of State - Canada, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Hampton Fund, Spencer Foundation, National Academy of Education, and UNESCO.

  • Published an extensive range of books and professional articles both nationally and internationally.

  • Supervised over 100 completed theses and dissertations in the past five years related to all areas within the Department and concerned with the education of preschoolers through adults.

Staff Members

The Department's outstanding administrative staff provide support to research and teaching programs for faculty, sessional instructors, and graduate teaching assistants. Each has worked in a wide range of roles at UBC.
