Parents As Literary Supporters (PALS)

Project Leader: Dr. Jim Anderson and Fiona Morrison

PALS is a a culturally responsive family literacy program for parents/caregivers and their preschool and five year-old children that I co-developed with Fiona Morrison.

Fiona Morrison, the Director of Early and Family Literacy with Literacy and I are co-leading a project in which we are translating the Parents As Literacy Supporters (PALS) program into four languages and training teachers/educators, multicultural workers and other support workers to work with refugee and immigrant families in their home languages and in culturally sensitive ways. The project is a collaborative effort involving five school districts: Abbotsford, Burnaby, Langley, North Vancouver, and Surrey. We also are documenting the development and implementation of the program and its impact in the communities served. The project is funded by a grant from the BC Ministry of Education.
