New Funding Initiative for Post-Doctoral Fellows

The OGPR is pleased to announce the 2006-2007 Faculty of Education Post-Doctoral Fellows Conference Travel Grant funding initiative. The principal goals of this initiative are to provide financial support to Post-Doctoral Fellows who must travel to present their work at conferences, and to also increase the opportunity of Post-Doctoral fellows to build their scholarly profiles/track record. The initiative is for any Post-Doctoral fellow in the Faculty of Education who is the first author and presenter of a paper, poster session, or workshop at a local, national or international conference.

Graduate Student Travel Funding

Students can apply for conference travel grants through LLED, OGPR, and FoGS.

Overview: In an effort to support graduate students’ travel to present their work at local, national or international conferences and to develop their scholarly profiles, the Department provides a limited number of travel grants. Students must be presenting or co-presenting (paper, poster, symposium) to be eligible. Conferences for which funding is sought should take place before all degree requirements have been met.

Eligibility: Magistral and Doctoral students are eligible for $250 minimum per degree in funding. Because of budgetary constraints, only a limited number of grants will be available each year. However, if the amount budgeted exceeds the amount requested in any academic year, the extra funds will be distributed to successful applicants. The LLED student travel grant can be used in conjunction with travel grants awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Office of Graduate Programs and Research. These are reimbursement grants and students are reimbursed after the expenses are incurred. Grants may be used to assist with accommodations, meals, registration and travel.

Application: Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Secretary and must include:
1. A letter of request from the student for funding describing how the conference will contribute to the student’s scholarly academic and/or professional career.
2. A written invitation (or confirmation of acceptance of a proposal) addressed to the applicant to present at a conference.

The deadline for receipt of applications is in early spring. The specific date of the deadline will be announced in the call for application each year. The award covers travel between March 15, the previous year to March 31, the current year. For each travel award, students must submit the appropriate receipts after the conference.

In addition, many of the professors within the Faculty of Education have funded projects and they employ students as Research Assistants. These vary from year to year and from project to project. The Department of Language & Literacy Education also employs a number of Teaching Assistants, primarily for work in the teacher education program. Teaching Assistants in the teacher education program are normally teachers certified by the province of British Columbia to teach in elementary or secondary schools. A number of other assistantships are possible for individuals to assist professors in the Faculty of Education. These require a thorough knowledge of English pedagogy. The form for applying for a TA or GRA position is available for downloading on our jobs page. Positions are posted in March and the deadline for submissions is April 30.
