Programs
Literacy Education (LITR)
Programs in Literacy Education draw on a range of multidiscipliary perspectives to engage aspiring professionals in the study of rich language and literacy practices from early childhood through adolescence and adulthood. Our faculty teach courses in the areas of Early and Adolescent Literacy Practices, English Education, Children's and Adolescent Literature, Drama and Theatre Education, Digital, Multimodal and New Literacies, and Adult, Family and Community Literacies. Literacy Education also participates in the interdisciplinary Masters Program in Children's Literature.
Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
The section of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) offers a
diploma
program, a certificate
program, and a graduate
program (offering
M.Ed., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees). The TESL diploma and certificate programs
train teachers to teach in a wide range of settings: adult community programs,
academic and vocational programs, overseas in k-adult English language
programs and English-medium programs, and in BC schools and language
institutes. To teach in public schools in BC, candidates must also possess
a valid BC teaching certificate. The TESL graduate program offers academic
and professional development to teachers and prepares researchers and leaders
in applied linguistics.
Modern Language Education (MLED)
The Modern Language section of the Department
offers graduate programs (MEd, MA, and PhD) for language teachers (French
and any other languages taught in school except English) who are interested
in research in second language acquisition, literacy, teaching, assessment,
or in bilingualism/plurilingualism. Of particular interest is a Master’s
degree (MEd) program taught in French in cohort mode every second year,
on even years, the first cohort starting in September 2008.
The Modern Language section also contributes a wide range of courses to
the Teacher Education Program.
The
Department has recently established the Centre for Research in Chinese
Language and Literacy Education, with the generous support of Hanban (The
Office of Chinese Language Council International). The Centre’s website
is currently under construction and will be available shortly.
Teacher-librarianship (LIBE)
The diploma and certificate programs
in Teacher Librarianship in this Department incorporate course work in
educational leadership, inquiry-based learning, literacy, collaborative
planning and teaching, information literacy, curriculum design and implementation,
multi-media resources, and digital learning technologies.
These programs educate teacher librarians to:
•
plan units of study collaboratively with other teachers;
•
teach information literacy to students;
•
develop curricula that integrate information literacy and digital learning
technologies;
•
work with teachers to improve literacy education;
•
build and manage collections of print and multimedia resources that support
curricula, lifelong learning, and independent reading.
UBC/Ritsumeikan Joint Academic Exchange Program
The Department of Language & Literacy Education staffs and provides courses for this innovative exchange program. Students attending Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan live at Ritsumeikan-UBC House with Canadian students and take courses for credit during the academic year. This program also supports several teaching assistantships for graduate students in the department and provides research opportunities for faculty and students.
