Candidates possessing a four-year undergraduate degree (e.g., BA, BSc) with good standing can pursue a 12-month BEd with a specialization in French teaching. In addition, qualified candidates may seek to pursue a Diploma, MEd, MA,or PhD degree focusing on questions and issues pertaining to French as a Second Language programs.
Although there are formal course requirements for the advanced degrees, students in the graduate programs are encouraged, with the aim of individualizing each program of studies, to take graduate courses in the Departments of French, Anthropology/Sociology, Psychology, and Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts, as well as in the Departments of Educational Studies, Curriculum and Instruction, Administrative Education, and Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education. In this way, each program is individually tailored to suit the talents and interests of the particular students. The MEd and MA degrees are available on a part- or full-time basis and have no residency requirement and the Ph.D. has a two-year residency requirement. Research fellowships as well as a variety of scholarships are available for part-time and full-time students.

French School Programs in BC
In British Columbia, there are four types of French programs in the schools:
Core French
All
students in Grades 5 to 8 must learn a second language; in most British
Columbia schools, that language is French. Students learn French two
or three times
per week as a school subject. They may continue Core French to Grade
12.
French Immersion Programs
Students start in Kindergarten (Early Immersion) or Grade 6 (Late Immersion)
to learn all their school subjects in French. As students move through the grades,
part of the curriculum is taught in English.
Francophone Schools
This option is designed for francophone children. Teachers use French as
a First Language (FFL) methodology to teach. These programs and schools
exist for Grade K-12 throughout the province. The pupils come from francophone
families and French is their first language.
Intensive French
This program is offered in several BC school districts. Students in Grade 6 are
immersed in French for 5 months where the focus is on language learning rather
than content learning. They then resume a regular English curriculum but with
a follow-up French program of one hour per day. A specialized pedagogical approach
is used.
